This article is part of my Project Profiles series that showcases some of the jobs we have completed over the years. This project was to replace an existing pressure treated wood deck that was old and had seen better days, with a new Azek deck that had a different design.

The existing wood deck was in poor condition and had multiple issues, including:

  • loose railings and newel posts
  • rotted decking in some areas
  • sagging stairs that were ready to fail
  • improper flashing at the ledger-board that had led to damage to some of the house sheathing and frame behind the ledger
  • undersized concrete post footings that were not installed to below the frost line
  • out of plumb support posts
  • most of the deck frame was in overall poor condition

It was time for a replacement and an updated design.

The New Deck

The customer wanted a new composite deck that would be low maintenance and last for years to come. After discussing options they chose TimberTech Advanced PVC by Azek in Slate Gray for the decking and TimberTech RadianceRail Express for the railing system. You can read more about the differences between PVC versus composite decking here.

For the new deck the customer liked the idea of having L-shaped stairs with a landing that provides easy access to the back door of the house from the driveway. This design also provided much more deck area to enjoy versus the original design.

Here are the material specs of the new deck:

Here are some more pictures from this project:

The Azek Slate Gray decking was installed using a feature board in the middle, installed perpendicular to the main decking field. Using feature boards is a great way to avoid having staggered seams in a deck when the width is over 20 feet (the maximum length of most decking.
